Sunday 23rd August: The Mangawhai Carb Club kicked off with its first working bee.
After a welcome and orientation, 25 people got into it, clearing and prepping the beds before planting several hundred spuds in 11 beds in just two hours. Then we enjoyed a delicious shared lunch before everyone dispersed again.

The Carb Club concept began in the Wairarapa. This is the first season for the Mangawhai Carb Club and we’ve had the ridiculously good fortune to be offered the use of a chunk of Sascha’s Te Arai Organics market garden, where he lives with his partner and children.
The purpose is to grow bulk storage crops, with a designed system of collective effort in order to rediscover the simple joy of meeting some of our food needs together… and who knows what else might happen along the way?! This year’s crops will be potatoes, with a few onions and pumpkins, and it will get shared based on the attendance at the working bees.
The working bees will be on weekends starting late August, and running till February or March.
